Q168What is the self-sufficiency rate for the supply of Japanese seafood?

A168According to MAFF statistics, in 2005 the self-sufficiency rate for seafood was 57%. Over the last few years, the rate has fluctuated between 57% and 53%. While analysis of recent trends shows that domestic consumption fell from 8.87 million tons in 1994 to 8.01 million tons in 2004, the decline has not been steady. Moreover, the per capita supply of food has been falling, having dropped from 39.1 kilograms per year in 1994 to 34.6 kilograms per year in 2004. One of the reasons given for this is that domestic production fell from 5.23 million tons in 1994 to 4.42 million tons in 2004. Although imports increased from 3.78 million tons in 1994 to 4.10 million tons in 2004, this was not enough to compensate for the fall in domestic production.
