Q51 Why did the Nintendo portable videogame con-sole sell so well?

A51Until 2005,the target audience for computer games had been children or serious game fans (so-called games maniacs). Games were priced to suit children's pocket money. The release in Japan of the game Brain Training, targeting adults and designed for the Nintendo DS, was accompanied by television commercials featuring female singer Hikaru Utada and actress Nanako Matsushima having fun playing the game. This created interest among people who previously had not bought computer games, and helped make the game popular with adults. While in the case of other videogames, only one game console is needed per family, the Nintendo DS is dif-ferent. As the portable console has wireless connectivity, people can play against each other simply by linking their machines, so one unit is required per individual player. Families that enjoy gaming will thus buy two or three consoles so that members can challenge each other.
